How to Add Search Engines to Internet Explorer 8

Open Your Internet Explorer Browser

Internet Explorer 8 comes with Microsoft's Live Search as the default engine in its Instant Search box, located in the top right hand corner of the browser window. IE gives you the ability to easily add more search engines by selecting from a predefined list or by adding your own custom choice.

First, open your Internet Explorer browser.

Click on the Search Options arrow, located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window next to the Instant Search box (see screenshot above). When the drop-down menu appears, select Find More Providers....

IE8's Search Providers web page will now load in your browser window. On this page you will see a list of search providers divided into two categories, web search and topic search. To add any of these providers to your browser's Instant Search box, first click on the engine's name. In the example above we have selected eBay.

At this point, you should see the Add Search Provider window, prompting you to add the provider chosen in the previous step. In this window you will see the name of the search provider as well as the referring domain. In the example above, we have chosen to add "eBay" from "www.microsoft.com".

There is also a checkbox present labeled Make this my default search provider. When checked, the provider in question will automatically become the default choice for IE8's Instant Search feature. Click on the button labeled Add Provider.

To switch your default search provider to another one that you have installed, click on the Search Options arrow which is located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window next to the Instant Search box (see screenshot above). When the drop-down menu appears, select Change Search Defaults...

You should now see the Change Search Defaults dialog, overlaying your browser window. A list of currently installed search providers is shown, with the default depicted in parentheses. In the example above, four providers are installed and Live Search is currently the default selection. To make another provider the default, first select the name so it becomes highlighted. Next, click on the button labeled Set Default.

Also, if you would like to remove a search provider from from IE8's Instant Search, select it from the list and click on the button labeled Remove.

To verify that your default search provider has changed simply view IE8's Instant Search box, located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window. The name of the default provider is shown in gray text in the box itself. In the example above, eBay is displayed.

Change Active Search Provider

IE8 gives you the ability to change the active search provider without modifying which choice is your default option. This feature is useful if you want to temporarily utilize another one of your installed search providers. To do this first click on the Search Options arrow, located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window next to the Instant Search box (see screenshot above). When the drop-down menu appears, select the search provider you wish to make active. The active search provider is noted with a check mark next to its name.

Please note that when Internet Explorer is restarted, the active search provider will revert to the default option.

Create Your Own Search Provider (Part 1)

IE8 gives you the ability to add a search provider not on their website to Instant Search. To do this first click on the Search Options arrow, located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window next to the Instant Search box. When the drop-down menu appears, select Find More Providers....

IE8's Search Providers web page will now load in your browser window. On the right hand side of the page is a section entitled Create Your Own. First, open the search engine you wish to add in another IE window or tab. Next, use the search engine to search for the following string: TEST

After the search engine returns its results, copy the entire URL of the results page from IE's address bar. Now you must return to IE's Search Providers Web page. Paste the URL which you copied into the entry field provided in Step 3 of the Create Your Own section. Next, enter the name you wish to use for your new search provider. Finally, click the button labeled Install.
