With the introduction of iOS 11, users have to ask the same, key question that they ask every year when a new version of the iOS is released: Can I run iOS 11 on my iPhone or iPad?

Apple releases a major new, full-number version of the iOS—the operating system that runs the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch—once a year. This is a big event, since new versions bring lots of cool new features and set the course for our devices in coming years.

This article answers if your iOS device can run the latest version of iOS. Learn about the history of iOS 11, some of its most important features, what to do if your device can't run it, and more.

iPhone 7 series 5th gen. iPad
iPhone 6S series iPad mini 4
iPhone 6 series iPad mini 3
iPhone SE iPad mini 2
iPhone 5S

If your device is listed above, you can run iOS 11.

If your device isn't in the chart, you won't be able to run iOS 11. That's too bad, but it also may be a sign that it's time for a new device. After all, iOS 11 runs on the last 5 generations of iPhone and 6 generations of iPads, with the oldest—the iPhone 5S and iPad mini 2—both being 4 years old. These days, that's a long time to keep a gadget.

Getting iOS 11

Apple offers a Public Beta program that lets you use beta versions of the OS before its official release. This is exciting, but it also comes with some risk.

Beta versions of software are still in development and don't have the kind of polish and quality that the final release does. In simpler terms: expect any beta to have lots of bugs.

So, remember, installing a beta could introduce problems to your device, so you may not want it on a mission-critical phone or tablet, but you may also be happy to make that trade in order to be on the cutting edge.

Later iOS 11 Releases

As of this writing, Apple's only announced iOS 11 release is the first version. This section will be updated with detail on updates as they are released, including if they affect compatibility with older devices.

What To Do If Your Device Isn't Compatible

If your device isn't listed in the table at the top of the article, it's not compatible with iOS 11. While that's not the best news, many older models can still use iOS 9 (find out which models are iOS 9 compatible) and iOS 10 (iOS 10 compatibility list).

This may also be a good time to upgrade to a new device. If your phone or tablet is so old that it can't run iOS 11, you're not just missing out on new software features. There have been years' worth of major improvements to hardware that you're not enjoying, from faster processors to better cameras to more beautiful screens. Plus, there are many crucial bug fixes you don't have, which could leave you vulnerable to hacking.

All in all, it's probably time for an upgrade. You won't be sorry to have the latest hardware running the latest software. Check your upgrade eligibility here
